McDavid, Hyman, Draisaitl, Hyman ready to change way they play to win Cup, Babcock says
Mike Babcock has been hired as Edmonton Oilers coach and met with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman prior to accepting the position, during which he outlined potential adjustments to their roles. Babcock has not been on an NHL bench since being fired by Toronto 23 games into the 2019-20 season, but the Oilers face pressure to win the Stanley Cup immediately with McDavid entering the first year of a two-year, $25 million contract and eligible to become a free agent on July 1, 2028. The meeting with the star players and their willingness to adjust their roles convinced Babcock to come out of retirement for the position.
