Ex-Red Wing Mike Babcock returns to NHL as Oilers' coach
The Edmonton Oilers named Mike Babcock as their 19th head coach, replacing Kris Knoblauch who was relieved of his duties after three seasons and two Stanley Cup Final losses. Babcock, 63, brings a 700-418-164 regular-season record over 17 NHL seasons, including a 2008 Stanley Cup championship with Detroit and prior coaching stops in Anaheim and Toronto. The NHL cleared Babcock to return to the bench following an investigation into his tenure with Columbus after the Players' Association requested review of alleged conduct.
