Detroit was awarded a PWHL expansion franchise in May and will begin play in the 2026-27 season, with the league holding its draft in Detroit on June 17. Manon Rhéaume was named the team's general manager, and the franchise will build its roster through expansion signings, player acquisitions, and the draft. Detroit's selection was based on the region's hockey history, fan support, and strong attendance during four previous Takeover Tour games that drew record crowds for professional women's hockey in the U.S.
