Cossa at a crossroads + Carter Bear chasing a Memorial Cup

Two prospect notes worth a thread. First, Sebastian Cossa is in a genuinely tricky spot. He surfaced in trade rumors, listed around No. 6 on Seravalli's board with Utah reportedly interested, and the key wrinkle is he needs to clear waivers to go back to the AHL now. So it is basically promote or trade for the crease. After the season he had backstopping a 16-1 Griffins club that is a real decision. Second, on a happier note, Carter Bear, our 2025 first rounder at 13th overall out of Everett, was in the hunt for a Memorial Cup. Frame the Bear stuff as I have seen it reported, medium confidence on the specifics, but a deep junior run is great for a young forward. Thoughts on the Cossa fork in the road?

The waivers thing is what makes me nervous. You cannot just stash him in GR anymore without risking losing him for nothing. If Gibson is the guy in net for now, where does that leave Cossa? I do not want to see a goalie we drafted and developed walk out the door for a mid pick.

Mechanically Cossa took a real step this year, the rebound control and the depth in his crease looked NHL caliber down the stretch in the A. The argument for promoting him is that with Talbot likely gone as a UFA there is an actual NHL backup job to win. You do not trade a goalie trending up unless the return blows you away.

If Utah really wants him you flip Cossa for a center prospect plus a pick and address the actual need. Wings get the center help, Utah gets their goalie of the future. Everybody wins.

I lean promote. He is waiver-eligible, he is coming off a dominant AHL season, and the backup crease is opening up with Talbot pending. Trading a 23 year old goalie you developed right as he is ready is the kind of move you regret. Sell high only if someone overpays badly.

Being on a trade board around 6 is not the same as being shopped, for the record. That usually means other teams are calling, not that you are actively selling. I read it as Detroit having leverage, not desperation.

On the Bear note, love hearing he was in a Memorial Cup hunt. A deep junior run against the best of his age group is exactly the kind of pressure environment that accelerates a young forward. Cannot wait to see him at camp.

ok the promote case is talking me off the ledge a little. as long as we do not lose him for a bag of pucks im good.

imagine developing a goalie through a 16-1 season and then trading him for a 47th pick equivalent. on brand honestly

Whatever happens here, having a waiver-eligible goalie this good is a luxury problem. Either he wins the backup job or he fetches a real return. Both outcomes are fine. This is depth, not a crisis.
