Per the post-elimination coverage out of the analyst circuit (Apr 25), Todd McLellan's status is genuinely up in the air after the late fade. The framing was that he's 'in the eye of the storm' with a roster shakeup expected this summer. There was also a line going around that he referred to some players as 'jerseys' down the stretch, which, if accurate, is not the kind of quote that buys a coach goodwill in a tenth-straight-miss season.
Nothing is confirmed either way. Yzerman hasn't tipped his hand publicly. But when your GM is already telling you he can't re-sign everyone and the season ended on a faceplant, the bench tends to be part of the conversation. Just calling what I see.
The 'jerseys' line bugs me more than the record does, honestly. If you're calling out the room in April you've already lost it. The deployment all year was the bigger tell though. He kept running Kasper in a role that buried him, never trusted the kids in spots that mattered, and the neutral-zone structure got passive every time they had a lead. That's a coaching fingerprint, not bad luck.
Let's be fair to the man. 92 points is the highest total since 2015-16. That's not nothing. The question isn't whether he's a bad coach, it's whether he's the right coach to push a 92-point team into a 96-point playoff team. Those can be two different answers. I'd want to hear Stevie's reasoning before I grab a torch.

Worth separating signal from vibes here. The team's even-strength xGF% was middling and the late-season dropoff was real, but a chunk of that overlaps with Larkin missing time after the March 6 injury and Copp going down around the same window. You can't pin the entire fade on the bench when your $8.7M center is out and your power play loses its triggerman. The coaching critique is fair on deployment. It's less fair on 'he tanked the back third.'
Four banners hang in that building. The standard isn't 92 points and a polite handshake in April. I don't need McLellan's head on a pike but somebody upstairs better explain why this is the guy to get us over the hump, because I've heard 'progress on paper' for a decade now.
Calling your players 'jerseys' is one of those quotes you only survive if you make the playoffs. He didn't.
